One in a Million is a charity with a passion for giving young people in Bradford a chance. Working with young people from some of the most deprived areas of the UK, One in a Million is committed to making a difference to the lives of young people, especially those who are ‘excluded’, ‘at risk of exclusion’ or ‘Not in Education, Employment or Training’ (NEET). Whilst collectively these terms are most commonly applied to school and educational settings, young people who find themselves in these positions are more often than not also excluded or at risk of exclusion from any family life and/or community engagement. Statistics show that four young people are excluded from school every hour in Bradford.

One in a Million already has an established track record of success in working with these young people and others aged 11 – 18 from across the Bradford District, particularly the Manningham Ward, the Buttershaw Community in the Royds Ward and the Canterbury Estate within the Little Horton Ward.

We provide alternative education programmes to young people who have found it impossible or difficult to succeed in a standard school setting, following a traditional or mainstream curriculum. Our approach is rooted in establishing a sense of worth and well-being in each individual student, focusing upon engagement, motivation, self-esteem and good behaviour which in turn facilitate learning, progression and success. Although there is no strict or single definition of ‘alternative education’, the term is commonly applied to teaching and learning activities that are different to those offered in the mainstream setting. Such activities are offered within an innovative curriculum with flexible programmes of study that are tailored to individualised needs, interests and progress. In our case, the key themes are sport, art and enterprise, with a particular emphasis on developing core skills in literacy and numeracy.

We are keen to support our youngsters in gaining a range of formal qualifications, including vocational awards that can be linked into progression opportunities in partnership with colleges and other post 16 providers, coaching qualifications, leadership awards and sector specific certification e.g. in catering and hospitality.

Our youngsters benefit from the input of professional sports coaches, artists and colleagues from various business and enterprise sectors.
Our young people can experience individual forms of evidence-based assessments, including portfolios, learning diaries and the collation of associated certification.

Above all, our youngsters enjoy and are challenged by positive and purposeful learning environments, focused upon positive self-esteem, engagement, motivation and respect for others.
